Miss M – Senior

I know I have said this before, but I just love working with the seniors. I can see myself doing a ton more of these! So Seniors, if you are out there call me! And if you are a senior and have worked with me and want some print credit, refer me. Just let your buddies know how to get in touch with me, tell them to let me know who sent them and I will hook you up with some print credits for more goodies!

Now, Miss M. LOVE her! She was so cute and stylish. You gotta love a senior that opens her bag, and you instantly want to start borrowing stuff. Lucky for her she has a teeny little dancers body, and I have a body of a mommy of 3 :). So no shopping in her bag…instead we walked around Sunken Rd and looked for fun spots to play in. I have shot at Sunken Rd alot, mainly families, so I went there this time looking for new spots and areas too fit her cool style, and I am very happy with what I was able to find. Unfortunately for the park staff, they will be seeing more of me out there!

Thank you hon for being so cute, and fun to hang with!

boys will be boys…

And I love them for that!

I grew up in a land of girls. I have a sister, and a lot of girl cousins. Although I am a touch of a tomboy, I really was not prepared for the “boy world”. Of course my first was a girl, and I assumed I would have more girls, that is all I knew and understood, and did well. As most of you know I do have two boys, and boy are the different, but in a totally cool way. My daughter is as girl as they get, dainty, princess, and anything else girly. My boys are the polar opposite, as they should be. But this is a large learning curve for me. I have had to learn to accept a ball in motion in my home at all times, dirt littered shirts since apparently boys do not use napkins no matter how many times you tell them, the belly laughs from fart sounds, guns, swords, sticks like swords, or even wrapping paper tubes that to me were telescopes, to them, weapons. It is amazing how they are inherently different. They have an angst that comes from inside, a drive to wrestle, run, jump, throw and fight that exceeds any ounce of energy that I have ever exuded. But they are just awesome, and I adore learning their world. My daughter on the other hand, totally annoyed (as any pre-teen should be of two younger brothers).

So last week I drove to Warrenton to meet a new client and her family. We had planned to do the shoot at her house. I get there and are greeted with two gorgeous smily little guys nearly the same age as my boys. Tech Decks, strewn across the floor (my coffee table is now a skatepark, so I totally get that), and Darth Vader and Superman t-shirts. Dad asked mom if those were the shirts they were wearing…she said “yep, that is them, that is what they are most comfortable in” and I was relieved. My ideas for the shoot totally evolved at that moment. I know how impossible it is to get my two boys to sit still for two seconds or wear a collared shirt. The only way to capture them is to let them be them, and they will let me shoot forever, and even give me ideas…and that is just what these guys did. We climbed trees, got eaten my mosquitoes, played stick drums and swords, got eaten by some more mosquitoes :), skateboarded, jumped in puddles, etc. Boys being boys. Of course once they got the “energy” out, we threw on a couple of polos and did a few family shots too, but mom, those I will save for the gallery!

I would love to do more of this type of session. Letting the kids just do what they do. Capturing them in their element, doing what intrigues them, or taking them places that they can interact. It was fun, and the kids had fun, and I drove home thinking nothing more than about my two boys.

Vineyard Wedding

I have been waiting and waiting and waiting for this wedding to arrive. I clearly remember the email from Nadia when we first started communication and she told me it was going to be a sunset wedding outside and at a Vineyard. I literally emailed her back and told her “I HAVE to do this wedding” :). And luckily I did! Bad news is that mother nature had another plan for that day, and it rained at the rehearsal and the wedding day. Don’t think that is was a dreary day though. This was one of the most good natured, friendly and go with the flow bunch of people I have ever worked with. Not only did they have to deal with rain, but power outages during their reception and the bus carrying all of their guest stuck at the bottom of a very large hill (in the rain). While the ceremony was delayed waiting for the bus to arrive, some of the guests in their party dresses and heels hiked up the drive (raining and all). Others that were not able to make the hike were carpooled by the Ushers, Dad and Groomsmen. Did anyone arrive annoyed or frustrated? Not at all.

The Father of the Bride leaned over to me at one point and mentioned that the Ushers generally have a pretty easy job…just escort the guests to their seats. Well, the usher on this day had his work cut out for him and did it like a pro. The ceremony stayed outside under the tent, but the path to get there was not short, nor dry. He accompanied the guests umbrella and all, sacrificed his own suit to keep theirs dry. We were all grateful for the dedication!

Nadia and Wes are awesome. They are truly ready to continue their life together and I was more than thrilled and honored to be the one to capture this. I was lucky enough to have the great Ingrid Kaslik along with me for this day, and any future couples of mine may see her again…LOVED her. Chateau Obrien was amazing, the catering was perfect, and the florals were beyond breathtaking. The entire event, troubles and all, was one of my favorites. As I have mentioned in my other wedding posts, I could have posted all of them. It was a stunning shoot, and very hard to weed through them. Thank you Nadia and Wess for having me, and we will get that sunset shot in the vineyard one day :)

Pumpkin Picking

Each year since I was a young child we had the same tradition. In the month of October we pack up and head out to the pumpkin patches, hit the hay rides, pet the farm animals and and get a day of fresh farm air in us. This is something that is convenient and a given to me, and something I now realize not everyone gets to enjoy. A past client of mine had her sister in town from Texas, and they really wanted to do a session at a pumpkin patch. No problem, kids in a pumpkin patch easy enough! Little did I know that they had never been to one.

WHAT? Never been to a pumpkin patch??

Apparently they don’t have them in Texas…sure now thinking about it, it makes total sense, but it is one of those things you just don’t consider unless you travel or have family in areas that don’t have these simple luxuries. I love the pumpkin patch, my kids adore it, and we go at least 3 times each fall (yes, my stoop gets littered with pumpkins by the end of October).

So this day, we traveled to one of my favorites. It is a quaint little farm, family owned and run. No big rides, air filled bouncing things, or even food stands. Just a perfectly manacured, animal filled, pumpkin patch. Everything from Alpaca, free range chickens that the kids can run about with, horses, goats, and cows. You can pick your own, or select from the already picked, he gives you hay rides and teaches you about his farm as well. The main thing I love about this, no lines, no commercial stuff, just real farm life, fresh air and all the pumkins you can choose from. To top it off, he has all the really cool antique style pumpkins. You know all those that you see in the Martha Stewart mag but have no idea where to get them…yep, he has them, and lots to choose from. See, I am not a orange pumpkin person. As much as I love pumpkin patches, I just don’t like the orange ones, they clash too much with my stuff (insert OCD personality here). Instead I do the white, blue, sage green, peach and oddly shaped ones. You can get these at his farm and even some gorgeous gords, mums (I got two very pretty vintage peach ones), fresh eggs, fresh veggies, and even a christmas tree! If you are interested, or are in VA and want to check it out it is Sneads Asparagus Farm. He does not have a site, but you can google it and get the addy. They are open sun up to sun down. If you still want to check out the Big Commercial style pumpkin patches, you will pass one of those on your way to Sneads.

Now onto the sneak peek.
