Autism | Fredericksburg Senior Photographer

I got a call from a new client, referred to me by an old friend. She was looking to get Senior Portraits done for her son…yay…I love senior portraits. As we talked I found that there was a little twist on the story…her son was Autistic. I personally have not had any experience with anyone Autistic, but have read a touch on it and felt I would be able to give her what she needed…”One good image”.

One good image…I can do that!

So of course I headed into the session a touch unsure, challenged and unaware of the level of Austism I was going to be up against. We had discussed an outdoor location would be best for him to be comfortable and of course, you know “I” am comfortable there too.

So Sunday a young man exited the car, handsome and quiet. I introduced myself, and he quietly acknowledged, head down and clearly nervous. I chatted with Mom a bit as we walked to the location and then started asking him simple questions just to get him comfortable with me. The session started a little slow and minor signs of his disability showed here and there, but other than that I felt I was dealing with nothing more than another shy teen. I never pushed him far, as soon as I felt he was getting even the slightest stressed, we walked and talked, and I would shoot. Casually I would ask him if he would like to sit somewhere, letting him guide the session. And before I knew it, I had a chatter box on my hands. He completely opened up to me, telling me all about his friends at school, asking me tons of questions, and we were well on our way. You can see the puzzling in his face at times, when he is processing his thoughts, or my comments, or when things start to get just a touch to much for him…those were my signs to back off and move on.

Otherwise I was happy and he was happy…and I know mom will be happy.

I knew this session would not be the same as my others, I would have little time to get what I needed. But I really wanted to give mom her image and give a deserving hard working young man his chance to have his Senior pictures too. If you know of anyone that has been hesitant to do so, or never thought it possible to get images of a child or person of disabilities, send them to me. Using a lot of patience, casual attitude and photographing in a relaxing environment those images are definitely possible, and I am more than willing to give it a try.

Anonymous - I never would have known he was Autistic until you exploited him in order to grow your business. Classy Move. You should be proud of yourself… I never follow your blog, but came upon it while searching for photographers; however, you can rest assured knowing that you are no longer on my list. It is very disappointing to see this type of behavior.

admin - Thank you all for your kind comments. To Anonymous: First anyone that is too chicken to share their name when leaving rude comments is just plain sad. Second: I talked to Mom first before writing this blog post. I asked her if she wanted me to share it, she said this: “Absolutely….I have always wanted ______ to be able to participate in everything. Not saying it hasn’t always been easy! I think that every parent of a special needs child would love that you are so patient and are willing to have each child have their special day.” You see this as exploitation…I see it as sharing that in the right environment and with the right person, everyone can have their chance to have their images taken, capture a special time in their life, and give mom something that she thought was going to be very hard…and it was not…at all. Also to share with the many photographers that read my blog, that they too, can handle a different type of client, just to relax, and let the client guide the session. And “Anonymous” if you have followed my blog or read through it at all, you will see I write real stories about my families, real stories about myself, and that I am not out for exploiting a client to better my business, my business is just fine. His mom and I were very proud of him, and I wanted to share it.

Michelle - What great pictures! The mother of this child is a very close friend (more like family to me) and these are beautiful pictures of her son! I know that children with special needs need special attention and consideration that is not always provided at in a traditional setting. I am happy to see that you made him feel at ease with this…pictures have sometimes been an issue for him. I will keep your name/contact information for other children with special needs. As for Anonymous’ comments…that is just ignorance, not knowing this child or his mother; he/she should not judge the situation at all. Thank you again for the beautiful pictures!!! I know that mom is thrilled already and so will her beautiful son! :)

I am going to photograph a 5 year old autistic child and super nervous…but I am going to remember what you say here and not push and I am going to read more about autism so I make sure he is comfortable with his surroundings and me =) Thank you for sharing and I know that this post sure will help me out in my session!

Catherine L Garcia - Oh Marta, what a handsome young man!! I love that you shared his story and love all your stories about the families you bond with. And thanks for the tips on dealing with special needs children. I recently did a photo shoot for a high school friend. Her son has tourets syndrome and aspergers. Things went well and mom told me that she has never been able to get a good picture of him since he was a baby. He’s 12! That made my day!

I volunteered to teach photography to children with disabilities at a local center here, Eva’s heroes. I am not the best photographer but just getting the opportunity to show them different capabilities with something I love would be just gratifying to me. I hope my application gets selected!

Thanks again, Marta for your heart to heart real stories of the awesome people you get to work with. Your work is awesome!!

Sharon - Marta, I am your subject’s Aunt and I can honestly say that we ARE thrilled and don’t feel exploited in the least. He looks so at ease with you. And, what you wrote in your blog totally captures his nature! JOB WELL DONE! You will be seeing us for our daughter’s senior pictures, that’s for sure! Thank you!

Gill - I love these images! I have 2 boys on the spectrum and know from personal experience that is is almost impossible to find a photographer who know about autism. I love these images! You have done a wonderful job and i do think it was important to mention autism, otherwise families in the same situation won’t know you are happy to photograph them. Well done.
