Week 4 . Hue & Texture and my take on Christmas this year

Happy HOLIDAYS!!!!! I must say I am having the best Christmas I have had in several years. This business has tortured me for the last few years when it came to the Holidays. I have lost my title as “psycho christmas chic” and probably disappointed my kids terribly at my lack of enthusiasm. See…I just got too busy. That is a good thing, and I am not complaining, but it cost me the love of my holidays since those are the busiest times of the year for photographers. By the time I had time for entertaining, decorating, and doing the Christmas Cheer or even Thanksgiving dinner, I just wanted to do nothing…I was spent.

So this year my husband begged me to take Mid Nov to Dec off. So I did. As much as I could. I took only the sessions that were time sensitive (Maternity, Newborn) and worked to finish up my orders. I busted my tail from Sept-Oct to get to all my clients before the Holiday time…it was hard work, but the reward has been bigger than I expected. With the bit of free time I had and my kids desires to decorate and craft…we decided to do a DIY (do it yourself) Christmas. All of it. I didn’t even unpack my tree, or ANY of my Christmas boxes! How liberating is that? And it has taught all of us some valuable lessons….

1) you do not need a lot of money to make a wonderful Holiday. Most of what we have was done with paper (stuff I had around the house), a tree we cut down from outside (dead and spray painted white), white string lights (1 strand of 300 for 8.50), pinecones, ribbon, maccaroni, glitter, felt, popcorn, paint, and glue.

2) spending time with family crafting is SUPER important, and fun!

3) sometimes we just need to take some time. My mental health is thanking me for this. I adore…ADORE…my business and do not regret a second of it…but somedays…it is just a lot.

4) to look at Christmas through the eyes of a child. Put my Martha Stewart everything has to be perfect self aside, and let them do what they wanted. They arranged, they hung everything, they chose their colors, they made snowflakes and hung them everywhere. To them it is perfect…and to me it is too.

So, this week…show me your Holiday…however you celebrate it. It is Christmas Eve, and the month of many other Holidays and traditions…so I am bending my rules (I can do that ;) ). Show me the textures and colors of your Holiday. Below is a taste of mine.

Anonymous - I’m happy for you – I let go of my Martha Stewart aspirations, too. Beautiful – both decorations and pictures! Once I’m done preparing all 13 dishes for Christmas Eve dinner/vigil I’ll get right to taking some pics of our creations. For now I’m done with silver theme – mostly kitchen inspired :)- http://malinaphotography.blogspot.com/2010/12/silver.html
And have the merriest Christmas ever!
