The colors in this session were just amazing. We even did a purple dress at the beginning that is not even shown here! This is a similar area to my first River shoot, but this time I was a little surprised by thigh high water verses the ankle high I had last time. Luckily my clients freakin ROCK, because they did not even hesitate to go wading to get to the locations for this shoot. We even threw in a bit of tree climbing…yes…I puffy heart my clients!

I have a quaint little studio with a ton of stunning natural light…and I just don’t use it enough. My photography started outdoors and that is probably where I feel the most comfortable. My options are endless and I don’t bore easily of it. Personally I am not a backdrop kinda girl. I like things to feel a bit more homey and lived in, less staged (although they are). So I tend to still find my way outside instead of in the studio. This session was for an Evolve Mentoring Session and I had some grand ideas for a Boho chic sun filled outdoor session, but Mother Nature once again had her own ideas for me. Last minute I decided to set up the studio in a bedroom-esque style and see what I could make of it. I must say, I love it. It is light airy, simple and clean. It is about the momma and her belly and the simple tones of her wardrobe. While the hunt is still on for a house (with many rooms for a studio), I think you will see me doing more “sets” in my current studio.

The outdoor portion of this session was probably one of the most adventurous. My normal river entrance location was closed, so we jumped over to the other side to an open access area. Little did we know that the river was a bit higher and the walking areas were skinny little trails winding along the edge. On the way there…it was just fine. On the way back…well….that was another story. It was raining…scratch that…POURING. I brought 2 large umbrellas with me, and handed those off to my two clients and used the large quilt I brought for myself. Skinny little trails on the side of the river quickly became muddy slippery trails. We carefully navigated our way back covered in mud and drenched (I was drenched). It will be a session we will not soon forget for sure!

I have been all over the place lately…and I apologize for my blog neglect. Literally just this morning I got home from flying to Pittsburg Friday to shoot an 11 hour wedding on Saturday. Needless to say being a jet set photographer is not as glamorous as it seems ;). I have napped, then edited several sessions and feel like I could nap again (or even sleep through the night at 6:45 pm).

But I wanted to get a quick little peek up of this lovely maternity session from a little over a week ago (I know…much later than my normal peeks).

Water | Fairfax Virginia Maternity Photographer

It is not a secret that I adore fields. I can pretty much shoot in them until I am blue in the face…and love every minute of it. Lately I have had tons of maternity clients…who all want to shoot in my fields. I can’t say I blame them, if I was prego again I would do the same thing. The fields look great, they are light, glowy, feminine and romantic.

But as a “creative” I get bored. Especially when it is the same type of client in the same type of location, over and over. So a few weeks ago, I was driving around town and the river caught my eye and instant visions of a maternity down by the river started to fill my brain. I had several maternity clients on the books and I eagerly began emailing them suggesting the river as a location, even bribing them with half field locations, half river in case they did not like the river images. Just so I could play. Finally after several “No’s”, I finally got someone interested and the session gave me a photographer high like I haven’t had in a while. Sadly we were quite rushed. The client was stuck in traffic and the area we parked had a closing time that we had to beat, so we shot all the outfits in less than 1 hour. Regardless, I am thrilled…I just can’t wait to go back and try the rest of the ideas I have day dreamed about.

This client also wins my unofficial Maternity Client of the Year Award :). Although the water looks shallow, we had to endure very rough rocks, slippery rocks, currents, deep water, goose poo and much more for this session. She deserves major Kuddos for not only being stunning, but for also being so super cool with doing anything I asked of her!
