This past Sunday I had a little product shoot for the Baby Couture line I am helping design and sponsoring. The Baby Couture line is a line of high end products designed with the newborn/baby photographer in mind. Pleasing color palettes, textures, design and function. During the shoot I asked a friend and fellow photographer Tanya Rey if she would like to assist and lucky for me she did :)!
The product shoot took place in my natural light studio. The studio itself is light gray and white (everything). Just outside the door of my studio there is a delicious 5×8 section of wall that is the original brick of the converted loft. It is my favorite wall and the chosen location for all of the product photography for the new line.
Trick is…
The space is SMALL. Like I can barely fit in it with my bean bag. It has a full length glass door, so the light is fabulous, but I am super limited on space. I believe it is 5′ x 6′ and my bean bag is 42″ of that…and I am NOT petite :). So why do this when I have a full open loft style studio just on the other side of the wall? Perfect texture, tones and light…that is why. The wall cannot be replicated or moved. So for the sake of the better backdrop I squeeze my bum, the props and the baby into this little space.
So why do I bring this to you?
How many times have you as a newborn or baby photographer walked into your clients home and gasped at the lack of light, tight spaces, cluttered homes, etc. Your mind immediately starts spinning wondering where you can find a good spot to do the images, how are you going to fit you, your things and a baby in the tight little spot and get some variety. I am telling you to stop, breathe and look for the light. Walk from room to room and look for it. Plop your bean bag down there, set up your drops, and work. Break out a wide angle to get wider shots (I use my 28mm), the 50mm for mid range, and then my 85mm or 100mm for the close-ups. I get all that in a spot that I am literally straddling the bean bag. Use your gear, your eye, and your angles to grab variety when you are limited. It doesn’t take much…
The above images are me working in that spot. The tips of my toes were at the wall, the bean bag was at the other wall.
Below are images that I have shot in this exact same spot. I have had munchkins, mommies, newborns and even snuggled up families in this little spot.
