Scenario….
I am out at a session in a rural setting with a gorgeous high school senior girl. There is a long old gray farm fence amongst the tall thick field. We start wandering over to the fence wading through the knee high thick grass. I ask her to lean up against the fence casually and relaxed, I make minor tweaks and turn away to head out to my position.
Since I wanted a full shot (you will see the image below), I have to truck across through the field. The grass is tall and thick so I am doing more of a march than a walk. Step, step, step…..then….I do my absolute best rendition of a Swan Dive.
Yes, folks…it took 4 years of shooting on location, in random fields, climbing things, teetering off of things, wading in rivers and such, but I FINALLY had my first fall. Camera in hand and all. When I turned around to cross the field, I was moving with my normal “photographer on the job” haste and was stomping through the thick grass to get where I needed to be. Camera was in my right hand (I rarely shoulder or neck carry) and after a few big steps I stepped straight down into a Gofer hole. There was no saving it…the most balanced of people cannot recover from a hole nearly 1.5 feet deep. My foot went down, my hands went up to save my precious camera, and I went face first into the grass. Classic. When I stood, I OMG’d like 100 times, checked my baby (camera), adjusted my Jackie O shades that had found their way diagonal across my face, scanned the perimeter praying the random jogger and the senior’s Dad did not see me and then laughed while I dusted the field off of me. And then proceeded to take the shot below, and finish up the rest of the session.
I hope that put a smile on your face. I would have killed for video of it!
